What is this tool?

A 13th salary — also known as 13th month pay, aguinaldo, tredicesima, or end-of-year bonus — is an extra month of salary paid to employees, typically at or near the end of the calendar year. In many countries it is required by labor law; in others it is a customary practice backed by collective agreements or company policy.

The concept originated in Italy in the early 20th century as a Christmas gratuity (gratifica natalizia) and spread worldwide. Today, over 30 countries have some form of mandatory or customary 13th salary, though the rules differ significantly:

  • Amount: most commonly one full extra month of salary (Brazil, Philippines, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece), but ranges from 15 days (Mexico) to performance-based discretionary amounts (USA, UK).
  • Taxation: some countries exempt a portion (Philippines exempts up to 90,000 PHP, Mexico exempts 30x UMA), others tax it as regular income.
  • Timing: most pay in December, but some split it across the year (Argentina pays half in June, half in December; Peru pays in July and December).
  • Proportional rights: nearly all countries grant proportional 13th salary for partial-year workers.

How it works

The calculator uses a straightforward formula:

13th salary = Monthly salary × Bonus amount (in months or days converted to months)

If you enter your marginal tax rate, it also calculates a net estimate:

Net 13th salary = Gross bonus × (1 − tax rate / 100)

The country dropdown does NOT change the calculation — it displays a reference card with that country’s legal minimums, typical bonus amounts, and tax rules. Use the dedicated tool for country-specific calculations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 13th salary?

A 13th salary (also called 13th month pay, aguinaldo, tredicesima, or end-of-year bonus) is an extra month of salary paid to employees, typically at the end of the year. In many countries it is required by law; in others it is a customary practice. The concept exists in over 30 countries worldwide under different names and rules.

Which countries legally require a 13th salary?

The 13th salary is mandatory in Brazil (13o salario, 1 full month), the Philippines (13th month pay), Italy (tredicesima), Spain (paga extra), Portugal (subsidio de Natal), Greece (doro), Argentina (SAC/aguinaldo), Colombia (prima), Mexico (aguinaldo, 15 days minimum), Costa Rica, Peru, Uruguay, and several others. In Germany and Japan, it is customary but not legally required. In the USA and UK, it is entirely discretionary.

How is the 13th salary calculated?

The most common method is: 13th salary = monthly salary times (months worked / 12). In Brazil, the 13th salary equals one full month of pay, proportional to months worked. In the Philippines, it is 1/12 of total annual basic salary. In Mexico, it is calculated as daily salary times 15 days. Each country has specific rules for partial-year workers.

Is the 13th salary taxable?

In most countries, the 13th salary is taxable. Brazil deducts INSS and IRRF from the 13th salary. Mexico exempts up to 30 times the UMA (about 3,519 MXN in 2026). In the Philippines, 13th month pay up to 90,000 PHP is tax-exempt. In Italy and Spain, it is taxed as regular income. Always check local tax rules for your situation.

Tips & Advice

When estimating your 13th salary, keep these points in mind:

  • Check your contract: In customary countries (Germany, Japan, USA), the bonus amount is often defined in your employment agreement or collective bargaining contract.
  • Proportional rights: If you started mid-year, most countries grant a proportional 13th salary. For example, if you worked 6 months in Brazil, you get 6/12 = 50% of your monthly salary as 13th salary.
  • Tax timing: Some countries spread the tax impact across months (Spain, Portugal), while others deduct it all at once (Brazil second installment).
  • Use dedicated tools: For Brazil and Mexico, our dedicated calculators include exact tax tables (INSS, IRRF, ISR) for precise amounts.

This global estimator is designed for quick reference across countries. For legally binding calculations, always consult local regulations or a qualified professional.
