What is this tool?

A Christmas bonus — also known as 13th salary, aguinaldo, year-end bonus, or December bonus — is an extra payment made to employees at or near the end of the calendar year. In many countries it is required by labor law; in others it is a customary practice backed by collective agreements or company policy.

The concept originated in Italy in the early 20th century as a Christmas gratuity (gratifica natalizia) and spread worldwide. Today, over 30 countries have some form of mandatory or customary year-end bonus, though the rules differ significantly:

  • Amount: ranges from 15 days of salary (Mexico) to a full extra month (Brazil, Philippines, Spain) to performance-based discretionary amounts (USA, UK).
  • Taxation: some countries exempt a portion (Mexico exempts 30x UMA, Philippines exempts up to 90,000 PHP), others tax it as regular income.
  • Timing: most pay in December, but some split it across the year (Argentina pays half in June, half in December; Peru pays in July and December).
  • Proportional rights: nearly all countries grant proportional bonus for partial-year workers.

This calculator gives you a quick global estimate. For exact calculations under specific country rules (including tax deductions), use our dedicated tools:

How it works

The calculator uses a straightforward formula:

Bonus = Monthly salary × Bonus amount (in months or days converted to months)

If you enter your marginal tax rate, it also calculates a net estimate:

Net bonus = Gross bonus × (1 − tax rate / 100)

The country dropdown does NOT change the calculation — it displays a reference card with that country’s legal minimums, typical bonus amounts, and tax rules. Use the dedicated tool for country-specific calculations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Christmas bonus?

A Christmas bonus (also called 13th salary, aguinaldo, or year-end bonus) is an extra payment made to employees at the end of the year. In many countries it is required by law; in others it is a customary practice. The amount is typically equivalent to one month of salary, but rules vary by country.

Which countries legally require a Christmas bonus?

Christmas bonuses are mandatory in Mexico (aguinaldo, 15 days minimum), Brazil (13th salary, 1 full month), the Philippines (13th month pay), Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru, and several others. In Germany and Japan, it is customary but not legally required. In the USA and UK, it is entirely discretionary.

How is the Christmas bonus calculated?

The most common method is: bonus = monthly salary times (months worked / 12). In Mexico, it is calculated as daily salary times 15 days (or proportional). In Brazil, the 13th salary equals one full month of pay. In the Philippines, it is 1/12 of total annual basic salary. Each country has specific rules for partial-year workers.

Is the Christmas bonus taxable?

In most countries, the Christmas bonus is taxable. Mexico exempts up to 30 times the UMA (about 3,519 MXN in 2026). Brazil deducts INSS and IRRF from the 13th salary. In the Philippines, 13th month pay up to 90,000 PHP is tax-exempt. In Germany, Weihnachtsgeld may be partially taxed. Always check local tax rules for your situation.

Can I calculate my Mexico aguinaldo here?

Tips & Advice

When estimating your Christmas bonus, keep these points in mind:

  • Check your contract: In customary countries (Germany, Japan, USA), the bonus amount is often defined in your employment agreement or collective bargaining contract.
  • Proportional rights: If you started mid-year, most countries grant a proportional bonus. For example, if you worked 6 months in Mexico, you get 15/365 x 180 = 7.4 days of aguinaldo.
  • Tax timing: Some countries spread the tax impact across months (Spain, Portugal), while others deduct it all at once (Brazil second installment).
  • Use dedicated tools: For Mexico and Brazil, our dedicated calculators include exact tax tables (ISR, INSS, IRRF) for precise amounts.

This global estimator is designed for quick reference across countries. For legally binding calculations, always consult local regulations or a qualified professional.
