💳 Japan Consumption Tax Calculator
Work out Japan's consumption tax (消費税) in seconds: add 10% or 8% to a net price, extract the tax from a gross amount, or split a tax-included total into net + tax for a receipt.
What is this tool?
Japan's consumption tax (消費税, shōhizei) is a national value-added tax applied to nearly every sale of goods and services. Since October 2019 there are two rates: the standard 10% and a reduced 8% that applies to food and beverages (except eating out and alcohol) and to qualifying newspapers. The price tag you see in a Japanese shop is normally tax-included (税込), so the tax has already been folded into the sticker price.
When you fill in an invoice or a kakunin-shinseisho (確定申告) it matters whether a figure is tax-included (税込, zeikomi) or tax-excluded (税抜, zeinuki). If a price already includes 10% tax, the tax amount is not 10% of the gross figure — it is 10÷110 of it. This calculator handles both directions so you never have to remember the difference. For a US-style flat rate on the total price, compare with our sales tax calculator.
How it works
The calculator supports three operations. To add tax, multiply the net price by 1.10 (standard) or 1.08 (reduced). To extract tax from a gross amount, divide by 1.10 and subtract the net (or take 10÷110 of the gross). To split a receipt total, the calculator asks how much of the total was bought at each rate and derives the individual net and tax figures.
| Transaction | Net (税抜) | Tax | Gross (税込) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Convenience-store food at 8% | 100 | 8 | 108 |
| Laptop at 10% | 50,000 | 5,000 | 55,000 |
| Dinner bill at 10% | 3,000 | 300 | 3,300 |
| Take-out bento at 8% | 600 | 48 | 648 |
Which purchases get the reduced rate? The 8% reduced rate applies only to food and drink sold for takeaway and to qualifying newspaper subscriptions.
| Category | Reduced 8% | Standard 10% |
|---|---|---|
| Food & drink for takeaway (supermarkets, convenience stores) | ✓ | — |
| Dine-in restaurants, cafes, food delivery | — | ✓ |
| Alcohol, soft drinks, bottled water | — | ✓ |
| Newspaper subscriptions (issued at least twice a week) | ✓ | — |
| All other goods and services | — | ✓ |
The tax-included total output is what actually appears on a Japanese register receipt, and the net + tax split is what your accountant needs. If you are comparing prices across countries, the sales tax calculator covers US state rates and our GST calculator handles Australia, Canada and New Zealand; the VAT calculator covers the European Union.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it true that 10% tax on a 10% tax-included price is not 10% of that price?
Exactly. If an item is 110 yen including 10% tax, the net is 100 yen and the tax is 10 yen — 10/110 of the gross, not 10/100. The calculator applies 10÷110 for extraction and 1.10× for addition so you never confuse the two.
What exactly is taxed at 8% instead of 10%?
Food and beverages for human consumption (except alcohol and restaurant meals) and subscription newspapers published at least twice a week. Everything else — appliances, clothes, electronics, services, eating out — is 10%.
Do I need the invoice (適格請求書) system if I am a small freelancer?
If you are a taxable business operator you must issue qualified invoices to let your business customers claim input tax credits since October 2023. The invoice must show the tax amount separately, which is why splitting a gross total into net + tax is so common in Japanese bookkeeping.
How is consumption tax reported?
Businesses file quarterly or annual consumption tax returns (消費税申告) with the national tax agency. The tax you owe is output tax minus input tax, and there are simplified (簡易課税) and regular (原則課税) schemes depending on your turnover.
Why is take-out food 8% but the same meal in a cafe 10%?
The reduced rate is designed for food as a household necessity, and eating at a restaurant is treated as a service rather than a food purchase. The rule draws the line at whether the food is consumed on the premises.
Can this calculator handle invoices in other currencies?
No — it is designed for yen figures on Japanese receipts. For currency conversion between countries use a dedicated currency converter, then apply the relevant rate here.

Tips & Advice
Food eaten inside a restaurant is 10%, but the same bento taken away is 8% — the take-out vs dine-in boundary is the single most common receipt mistake. Alcohol and all drinks served in restaurants are always 10%. Since October 2023 the invoice system (適格請求書, qualified invoice) requires the buyer to see the tax amount on business receipts, so a tool that splits gross into net + tax is a daily necessity for freelancers and small shops. For bank transfers or contracts in whole yen, figures are rounded to the nearest yen; the standard method for Japanese business practice is rounding down on each line. Limitations
This is a planning tool, not tax advice. Rates, thresholds and rules change; the 8% reduced rate has specific product exclusions (restaurant meals, alcohol) that this calculator cannot judge automatically. Confirm every figure with a licensed accountant before filing.
