Australia Car Stamp Duty by State
Estimate the motor vehicle (stamp) duty on a standard passenger car in any Australian state or territory for 2025-26, and compare all eight jurisdictions.
What is this tool?
Motor vehicle (stamp) duty is a state government tax charged when you register or transfer a vehicle. Each state sets its own scale and the rate can depend on the vehicle type and, in some states, its emissions. This tool uses the standard passenger-car scale for each state and compares all eight jurisdictions. How it works
Choose your state and enter the vehicle value. The tool shows the estimated duty, the effective rate and a comparison across all states.Standard passenger vehicle โ read this first
This calculator models the standard passenger-car motor vehicle (stamp) duty for each state and territory, using the 2025-26 scales (ACT figures effective 1 September 2025). Green / electric vehicles, commercial vehicles, motorcycles and some concession-card holders can pay less โ and in a few states, nothing. The duty is charged on the higher of the purchase price or market value. Always confirm the exact figure with your state revenue office or transport authority.
Estimated duty by state at $40,000
How the same vehicle would be dutied across the eight jurisdictions (standard passenger car):

| VIC โ Victoria | $1,680.0 |
| QLD โ Queensland | $1,200.0 |

Queensland: duty depends on engine type and cylinders
The Queensland figure here uses the simplified rate for a standard vehicle. Queensland actually sets registration duty by engine type and cylinder count โ hybrid and electric vehicles pay a lower rate, while 5โ6 cylinder and 7-or-more cylinder vehicles pay higher rates, with an additional amount per bracket above $100,000. A 4-cylinder vehicle is close to the number shown; larger-engined vehicles will pay more. Check the Queensland Revenue Office schedule for the exact rate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the exact duty?
It is the standard passenger-car duty for each state. Green / electric vehicles, commercial vehicles, motorcycles and some pensioner or exemption cards can pay less (or, in a few states, nothing). Always confirm with your state revenue office or transport authority.
Why does it differ so much by state?
Each state and territory sets its own scale โ some are close to a flat percentage, others use thresholds that lift the rate sharply above certain values (for example NSW above $45,000, WA above $50,000, and the ACT emissions tiers).
Does this include registration and CTP?
No. This is the stamp duty only. Registration fees, compulsory third-party (CTP) insurance and transfer fees are charged separately.

Tips & Advice
Vehicle duty is usually charged on the higher of the purchase price or market value. Declaring too low a value can trigger a reassessment plus penalties โ enter the real figure.Related Tools

Limitations
Uses each jurisdictionโs published 2025-26 motor vehicle duty scale for a standard passenger car, without concessions for low-emission vehicles, primary producers, or vehicles transferred between family members. Several states set duty by engine type and cylinder count rather than a single rate โ notably Queensland, where hybrid and electric vehicles pay less and 5โ6 and 7-plus cylinder vehicles pay more โ so a 4-cylinder car is closest to the figure shown. It excludes luxury car tax, registration and plate fees, and compulsory third party insurance.
