💰 Germany Net Salary (Brutto-Netto) Calculator
Work out your 2026 German take-home pay from gross salary. The calculator applies the four social-insurance contributions and income tax for your tax class, then shows net monthly pay.
What is this tool?
Brutto-Netto is the gap between your gross salary (Brutto) and the amount that actually lands in your account (Netto). German payslips deduct, in order: the four social-insurance contributions (pension, health, unemployment, and care insurance), then wage tax (Lohnsteuer) based on your tax class, then the solidarity surcharge and possibly church tax. The total take rate typically runs from about 30% for low earners to over 45% for high ones.
Your tax class (Steuerklasse) I-VI determines how much wage tax is withheld each month - primarily a withholding device, since your true annual bill is settled on the tax return. Classes I (single), II (single parent), III/V (married, one/two earner), and IV (married, equal) are the common ones.
How it works
From gross monthly pay the calculator first deducts social insurance, each capped at its 2026 contribution ceiling (Beitragsbemessungsgrenze):
| Insurance | Employee rate 2026 | Monthly ceiling |
|---|---|---|
| Pension (RV) | 9.30% | 8,450 euro |
| Unemployment (AV) | 1.30% | 8,450 euro |
| Health (KV) | 7.30% + half Zusatzbeitrag (~8.75% avg) | 5,812.50 euro |
| Care (PV) | 1.80% (childless 2.40%) | 5,812.50 euro |
The remaining amount is taxed using the 2026 income-tax tariff (annualised for your tax class), then Soli (above the 20,350 euro exemption) and church tax are added. The tax-class effect:
| Class | Typical situation | Withholding |
|---|---|---|
| I | Single, no children | Standard |
| II | Single parent | Lower (relief) |
| III | Married, one earner | Much lower |
| IV | Married, equal split | ~ Standard |
| V | Married, secondary earner | Much higher |

Frequently Asked Questions
What takes the biggest bite from German gross pay?
For most employees the income tax and the health-insurance contribution are the largest deductions, followed by pension insurance. Together with unemployment and care insurance, social contributions alone are roughly 20% of gross for the employee, with wage tax on top.
Why is my net pay higher in tax class III?
Class III is for married couples where one spouse earns most of the income. It withholds tax as if you had double the basic allowance (the splitting advantage), so less is taken each month - but the couple still settles the same total bill on a joint return.
How much is the health-insurance deduction in 2026?
The statutory health-insurance rate is 14.6% plus a fund-specific Zusatzbeitrag, split equally between you and your employer. With the 2.9% average Zusatzbeitrag, your employee share is about 8.75% of gross up to the 5,812.50 euro monthly ceiling.
Do I pay church tax if I am not a member?
No. Church tax is only withheld for members of tax-collecting churches. If you are not registered as a member, select 'None'. Leaving the church requires a formal exit at the registry office, not just a calculator setting.
Is this the same as my monthly payslip?
It is a close estimate using the 2026 rates and an annualised income-tax tariff, but employer-specific details (Saison-KV, deferred compensation, expense reimbursements, exact monthly Lohnsteuer progression) can shift the real figure by a few euros. Use it for planning, not as an official payslip.

Tips & Advice
Health-insurance costs vary because each Krankenkasse sets its own Zusatzbeitrag (the average is about 2.9% in 2026, split equally). Picking a cheaper insurer lowers your KV rate. The care-insurance rate rises with fewer children, so adding a child can increase your net pay. Married couples should compare III/V versus IV/IV: III/V front-loads the deduction to the main earner but usually requires a return. Remember this is a monthly-withholding estimate - your annual return can still produce a refund.

Limitations
This calculator estimates 2026 German net pay using the statutory social-insurance rates and an annualised Section 32a income-tax tariff for tax classes I-V (Class VI / second jobs use a separate method and is not modelled). It applies the average health-insurance Zusatzbeitrag unless you override it, and the Saxony care-insurance employer rule when ticked. It does not capture employer-specific items (deferred compensation, expense allowances, exact monthly Lohnsteuer progression, mini-job rules), and married-class results assume a standard splitting scenario. It is a planning estimate, not an official payslip or tax assessment - confirm with your employer's payroll or a Steuerberater.
