Estimate your monthly student loan payments and total repayment cost.

What is this tool?

Our Student Loan Calculator estimates your monthly payments, total interest, and total repayment cost for federal and private student loans. Understanding these numbers helps you budget effectively and compare repayment strategies before or after graduation.

How it works

The calculator uses the standard amortization formula: M = P × [r(1+r)^n] / [(1+r)^n - 1], where P is the loan principal, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12), and n is the total number of monthly payments. This produces a fixed monthly payment that fully amortizes the loan over the chosen term.

Frequently Asked Questions

¿Cuál es el plazo de pago estándar?

Federal student loans typically have a standard 10-year repayment plan. Extended plans up to 25 years are available but result in more total interest.

¿Existen opciones de pago basadas en ingresos?

Yes. Federal loans offer income-driven repayment (IDR) plans that cap payments at 10-20% of discretionary income, with forgiveness after 20-25 years.

¿Puedo pagar mis préstamos estudiantiles antes de tiempo?

Yes, federal and most private student loans have no prepayment penalty. Paying extra reduces total interest and shortens the repayment term.

Tips & Advice

Make payments during the grace period if possible, as interest may accrue. Consider refinancing private loans at a lower rate, but be cautious about losing federal protections. Set up auto-pay for a small interest rate reduction (typically 0.25%).
