🏎️ Speed Distance Time Calculator
Solve any speed, distance or time problem by entering two known values. Supports km/h, mph, m/s, km, miles, meters, hours, minutes and seconds. Perfect for physics homework, road trips and running pace calculations.
What is this tool?
Speed, distance and time are the three fundamental quantities in kinematics — the branch of physics that describes motion. The relationship between them is captured by one of the simplest yet most useful formulas in all of science: distance equals speed multiplied by time (d = v × t). From this single equation you can rearrange to find any one quantity if you know the other two. Need speed? Divide distance by time (v = d / t). Need time? Divide distance by speed (t = d / v).
This relationship governs everything from a morning jog to a spacecraft crossing the solar system. A driver planning a 400-mile road trip at 65 mph wants to know how many hours the journey will take. A runner checking whether a 5K pace of 6 minutes per kilometer is fast enough to beat a personal record. A physics student verifying the terminal velocity of a falling object. All of these boil down to the same three-variable equation.
This calculator handles the arithmetic for you and supports mixed units. You can enter distance in miles, speed in km/h and time in minutes — the tool converts everything internally and gives you the answer in the units you choose. No more fumbling with conversion factors or second-guessing your algebra. How it works
The calculator is built on the formula d = v × t, where d is distance, v is speed (velocity) and t is time. When you enter any two of the three values, the tool solves for the third: if distance and speed are known, time = distance ÷ speed; if distance and time are known, speed = distance ÷ time; if speed and time are known, distance = speed × time.
Internally, all values are first converted to base units (kilometers for distance, kilometers per hour for speed, hours for time) so the math is consistent. The conversion factors used are: 1 mile = 1.609344 km, 1 meter = 0.001 km, 1 km/h = 1 km/h, 1 mph = 1.609344 km/h, 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h, 1 hour = 1 h, 1 minute = 1/60 h, 1 second = 1/3600 h. After computing the result, the tool converts back into whichever output unit you selected.
| Conversion | Formula | |---|---| | km/h to mph | mph = km/h ÷ 1.609344 | | mph to km/h | km/h = mph × 1.609344 | | km/h to m/s | m/s = km/h ÷ 3.6 | | m/s to km/h | km/h = m/s × 3.6 | | mph to m/s | m/s = mph × 0.44704 | | miles to km | km = miles × 1.609344 |
The calculator also guards against division by zero: if you leave time blank and enter zero for speed, it returns an error since time cannot be computed from a zero speed (it would be infinite). How to use
- Enter any two of the three values distance, speed or time.
- Select the appropriate unit for each value you entered.
- Choose the desired output unit for the value you left blank.
- Click Calculate to see the result.
- Verify the result makes sense — check that the units and magnitude are reasonable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I mix different units, like miles for distance and km/h for speed?
Yes. The calculator converts all inputs to base units internally before computing. You can enter distance in miles, speed in km/h and get time in minutes — the tool handles every combination automatically.
What happens if I enter all three values?
If you fill in all three fields, the calculator displays all three values with their selected units. It does not check whether the three values are consistent with each other — that is up to you.
Why do I get an error when calculating time with a speed of zero?
Time equals distance divided by speed. If speed is zero, you would be dividing by zero, which is mathematically undefined (the result would be infinite). A zero speed means the object is not moving, so it can never cover any distance regardless of how much time passes.
How accurate are the unit conversions?
The calculator uses the international standard conversion factor 1 mile = 1.609344 km, which is exact by definition. Results are displayed with up to 6 decimal places. For most practical purposes — driving, running, homework — this is more than sufficient.
Can I use this calculator for acceleration problems?
No. This tool assumes constant speed (uniform motion). If the object is speeding up or slowing down, you need equations that account for acceleration, such as v = u + at or s = ut + ½at². Look for a kinematics or acceleration calculator for those problems.
Does this work for running and cycling pace?
Absolutely. Runners often think in minutes per kilometer or minutes per mile rather than km/h or mph. Enter the race distance and your target time, then the calculator gives your required average speed. You can then convert that to a pace if needed.
Tips & Advice
When solving speed-distance-time problems, always write down what you know and what you need to find before plugging in numbers. Pay close attention to units — mixing miles with kilometers or hours with minutes is the most common source of mistakes. If a problem gives you a speed in m/s but the distance is in kilometers, convert one before calculating. For road trip planning, remember that average speed is usually lower than your cruising speed due to traffic, stops and terrain; adding 10–15% to the estimated time is a good rule of thumb. In physics, velocity is a vector (it has direction) while speed is a scalar — but for most everyday calculations you can treat them the same. When working with acceleration problems, remember that the simple d = v × t formula only applies when speed is constant; if the object is accelerating, you need the suvat equations instead.
