Kanreki (還暦, literally "calendar return") is the Japanese celebration of a person's 60th birthday (counted in kazoedoshi). It is one of the most important longevity celebrations in Japanese culture because it marks the completion of one full cycle of the 60-year sexagenary cycle (六十干支, rokujukkanshi).

This is why the celebration is so significant: the person has lived through an entire cosmic cycle.

Traditionally, the kanreki celebrant wears a red vest and red hat (赤いちゃんちゃんこ, akai chanchanko) and a red cushion is used. Red symbolizes a "return to childhood" (赤ちゃん, akachan = baby) — the person is reborn into a new cycle. The celebration includes:
